Minitubers

The purchaser of potato seed-tubers must be able to obtain the tubers in the desired size-range, in the cultivar of choice, with high health status and in a suitable physiological condition.

The length of the production cycle from pre-basic seed to seed for commercial ware crops is determined by economics and the multiplication rates of the intermediate generations. Micropropagation methods have been adopted uniformly in the maintenance and storage of new cultivars and the technology has been simplified and developed commercially, so that micropropagation and minituber production are now widely used for the rapid production of larger quantities of virus-free, pre-basic seed.

The potato microplants which are the foundation for these minitubers are grown in a sterile laboratory environment at GenTech with controlled temperature and photoperiod. Potato Minitubers are produced in a sterile glasshouse environment with controlled fertigation, temperature, and photoperiod to ensure consistency of product.
